Legend has it that when Napoleon slipped out of Egypt bound for France, a Maltese-flagged xebec helped his small fleet evade British patrol ships. Irene’s name appeared in no French military record, only in forged passes, leaked routes, and a night of fruitless British searches. To the British, she was a smuggler. To the French, an exile. When the First Barbary War broke out, William Eaton recruited Irene into his expedition for her connections and experience in the Mediterranean underworld.
